Apple Crisp has always been a go-to dessert in our house—there’s something so comforting about the warm, cinnamony goodness paired with a scoop of ice cream. But until now, I’ve never tried making it with Crab Apples. With our tree producing more than we can snack on, I decided it was time to put these tart little beauties to good use. And what better way to start than with a crisp?
Crab Apple Crisp Recipe
*disclaimer, I feel like Apple Crisp is one of those recipes you can “measure from your heart” so this recipe is roughly how I made it!
Topping:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/3 cup cold butter, diced
Filling:
2 lbs of crab apples, peeled and sliced around the core
2 tbsp butter, melted
2 tbsp flour
2 tbsp water
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Preheat oven to 375. Grease an 8×8 inch baking dish or pie pan and set aside.
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the dry topping ingredients. Add the diced butter and work into dry ingredients until it looks like little crumbles. I use my hands for this.
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together melted butter and flour. Add water, lemon juice and vanilla extract and mix well. Stir in the sugar and cinnamon.
In a large bowl add the apples and butter mixture. Toss to coat all of the apples and pour it into your baking dish, spreading evenly.
Sprinkle to topping mixture over the top of the apples. Bake until apples are tender, about 40 minutes.
Serve warm with ice cream!

I use this recipe for all apple types when making crisp, I just think it’s extra special using apples right from our yard!

Welcome to my yard…aka, my giant work in progress! Excuse the weeds, I like to keep it real around here! Enjoy this quick little photo tour of what it looks like right now.
We have been living here for about 6 years and haven’t really touched the yard aside from general maintenance. I am excited to now have a little more time to get my hands dirty and develop this essentially blank canvas.
It will be fun to look back at these in a few years and see the changes (and what’s still the same)!
The Front Porch
My favourite outdoor space is the front porch and steps. Throughout the warm months I do a lot of “front porch sitting” while enjoying a cool drink, a good book, or working on a cross stitch project! I barely made it to the greenhouse before they closed this year so I was scrambling to put together enough flowers for a cohesive look. Good thing I love purple, because that was all that was left! The pots are looking a little leggy right now but I’m happy with how they turned out despite using “leftovers”.
The Front Yard
Two things I absolutely love about our front yard is the circular driveway and all of the giant spruce trees. We have actually been trying to get an arborist to come look at them as some of them have been going down hill lately. We lost one of the biggest ones in a bad plow wind, I would hate to loose anymore.
The front yard has a cute little storage shed that I would love to build some flower beds around.

This area needs some serious work. Grass has taken over the flower beds to the point I think they need to be redone from scratch. Probably a project coming soon.
Side and Back Yard
I usually prioritize filling up this flower bed next to the house every year but this year got away from me. I had purchased a flat of zinnias and they were planted really late in the season so just now catching steam and starting to grow. I have also been slowly planting perennials in here. Another work in progress!
Our fire pit spot is a cozy little area that could use a lot more love! We were gifted that amazing swing for Christmas, made by long time family friends and the tailgate bench was custom made and provides the rustic vibes I love.
Although, it looks like it could use a fresh stain!
To the right and behind those two little trees was the location of our huge vegetable garden. The dirt there is amazing but unfortunately it is in a low spot and in wet years our garden would flood. Between flooding and lack of time, we chose to let the veggie gardens grow in with grass.
Lots of space and lots of grass in the back yard!
Corrals and Pasture
This might actually be my favourite spot in our yard! I am slowly developing corrals and a place to keep and ride my horses. For now I have two wind panels for protection from the weather, a few regular panels for a pen, and also utilizing electric fence to take advantage of the abundant grazing we have available.
Love this little alley between the trees and fence…sometimes it’s the little things!

Looking towards the corrals and pasture from our driveway. Would love to build a little barn up there someday and an arena to the right side where the bale is sitting! There is currently an old torn down granary in the long grass in the pic (you can kind of see the top of the roof). That will be one of many projects we need to get done before the snow falls!
