My Groundbreaking Discovery

I’ve made a massive discovery.

It’s revolutionary really.

I have discovered…….

(cue the drum roll)

The current state of our desktop is a direct reflection of our life.

Well it certainly applies to me anyway, haha. Yup. My life is crazy, full, completely disorganized chaos!

Things are overlapping each other and there is hardly room for anything else.

Thankfully it only took a couple of minutes to organize and tidy up my desktop. Of course it may take a bit longer to “straighten up” my actual life but in all honesty if I take a second to sit back and look at the big picture it’s not as complicated as it feels, it just needs a little sorting out. And there is a lot, I mean a lot, to be thankful for!

On another note……

it’s okay to have waffles for supper right?

It seems to be an on going argument in our household and I am being outvoted 2-1.

But as long as I am the “cook” I get the last word and it was waffles for supper tonight, ha!

I hope your day is amazing and don’t forget, “you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

Why I Really Closed The Store Front

This is hard to share but important to set the scene of where I currently am on my journey…….

My husband was let go from his job.

Okay, that is not the only reason I came to the decision to close the Dusty Road Boutique store front location.

But let me tell you, when your husband suddenly and unexpectedly loses his job of 9 years. A job he loved and was very passionate about.  You end up doing a lot of soul searching.

4 years ago when I jumped head first into the retail business with literally no experience just a dream and a positive attitude I had no clue where it would take me. I knew I wanted to build an online store, when you live in a small very rural community your customer base for a retail store, especially a more niche store like mine, is pretty darn small. Opening up the online store to the entire country meant opening it up to millions of potential customers.

So I did it.

Again, with no experience whatsoever I learnt as I went (and I am still learning and will never stop learning).

I also haven’t paid myself a dime. Every single penny from the last four years has gone directly back to growing the business into my dream. And I am 100% okay with that. I planned for that.

I was also blessed to be able to do that because my husbands career luckily was able to support us. We also have a small farm we juggle between our jobs which provided a little extra income.

Last June the online store really started growing and picking up some steam and it quickly started out performing my store front location. I was starting to achieve some of the goals and I was starting to make new, more lofty goals.

I was also, in the back of my mind, thinking I could use my resources a little more wisely if I didn’t have my store front location.

On paper it was the smart thing to do. But in my heart I wasn’t sure what to do.

I didn’t want to take another business away from my little small town. I love small prairie towns and frankly there isn’t a lot to them anymore but every once in a while you can find small hidden gems in them and I was hoping Dusty Road was one of them.

I also was worried about what people would think. I was afraid they would judge me. That they wouldn’t understand, they would only see the surface and would think I was a failure.

When you start a business, especially an online business you must have a thick skin. And I do. But when it is your peers “judging” you it digs into that thick skin a little more than usual.

I kept trucking on but the internal battle in my head raged, should I keep the store open or should I just go online?

And then my husband got the news and our lives were completely flipped upside down. It’s a feeling I know some can relate to, and if you can’t I hope you don’t ever have to!

It sucks. But we are taking it as an opportunity to really figure out what we want in life. We have hashed out all of our options, talked about all of our goals, and considered all of our priorities.

A lot of soul searching has been happening. And I think we’ve learned a little more about ourselves from the process.

My husband really wants to stay on his career path and I commend him for that. In order to do that we may have to relocate.

<deep breath>

Thats big. Thats kind of scary. Thats kind of exciting too.

And it also gave me a new outlook on the future of Dusty Road. The battle in my mind became a little more clear. The potential to have to relocate made me think I needed to make my business more mobile. That’s the beauty of an online store.

It still wasn’t easy but once I make up my mind I don’t look back.

I decided what was best for myself and my family and smartest for the business was to close the store front and focus on the online store.

The vision and goal of Dusty Road has not changed. I have already had so many people reach out to me with trade show, pop up, and collaboration opportunities.

Letting go of the store front has been somewhat of a freeing experience. When one door closes another door opens…..sometimes several doors!

As I write this I have no clue where this adventure is going to take us. Literally and figuratively. It’s stressful and scary but I am making peace with the unknown.

One thing is for sure, I will always be moving forward. Always learning and growing and improving.

I take pride in always trying to find a positive in every situation. That everything “bad” is an opportunity for good. I like to make lemonade out of lemons!

And I am super excited for the future of Dusty Road!!

What A Difference A Year Can Make

Welcome to Day 1 of my daily blog.

I’ve been wanting so badly to document my journey with a vlog on Youtube but after trying to squeeze video editing into my already jam packed schedule it just wasn’t feasible. I do want to spend at least some time with my family, lol.

I do love to write though so a daily blog is a nice compromise. I have a tendency to start things and never follow through, so I have made a promise to myself to commit to 90 consecutive days and go from there.

I am excited to share my experiences and my goal behind this daily blog is to inspire others to take the leap and go after your goals and dreams. I plan on sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly……and there is a lot of all three.

Today feels like a new beginning for me.

Friday was the last day for the Dusty Road Boutique store front location and it felt a tiny bit weird not having to wake up, get myself ready, and drive into town to open the door at 10am.

Everything is still being stored at the store right now so I did have to go in and ship packages today and I will be doing a lot of the day to day operations there until we get things moved to the new warehouse space, aka my basement!

The forecast said it was supposed to snow overnight so we were surprised when we woke up to no fresh snow.

That didn’t last long though. It started falling fast and furious around 9am and the country was quickly covered in yet another white blanket of snow!

It’s easy to forget what month we are in.

When I got to the store this morning a box  was waiting for me from Bath & Body Works! Eeeek, I love online shopping too!

I patiently waited until I got home and then I ripped that sucker open, haha….

Gah, I just love their boxes! Dusty Road #goals!!

I am obsessed with Bath & Body Works. Their 3-wick candles are ah-ma-zing. My skin depends on their Sand & Sea Salt Scrub . And my home needs the Stress Relief wall flowers plugged in at all times.

In the winter I love to burn some of the “heavier” scents but with the season (hopefully) changing I wanted to get some lighter, fruitier, and floral scents. I can’t wait to try them out.

So far just from giving them the “sniff test” my favourite is Mango Mai Tai but once they are burning that could change!

I am also a huge fan of their foaming hand soap. We were still using Christmas smells so I swapped them out for these!

Can you tell I love the beach?

Another must have candle (in my opinion) is Happiness from their Aromatherapy line.

It’s just so good!

And yup, that’s my hubby washing dishes in the background, lol. That makes me pretty happy too!!

Tuesday’s at Dusty Road mean new arrivals are launched.

Along with that I plan out a rough social media schedule and design and send out an email to my list featuring all of the new arrivals.

I also spent a good portion of the day planning out our very first “Life & Style” live show that we debuted on Facebook live!

Myself, along with with three amazing friends (and now DRB team members) collaborated  for a panel style talk show and oh my gosh it was so much fun!

These are just a couple of screen shots from the video so excuse the poor quality!

A year ago it took me an hour to muster up enough courage to press the LIVE button and do my very first video so it is pretty cool to be able to do this show and sit in front of the camera for an hour talking and not have a panic attack! I would of never dreamt of doing this a year ago!

Our next show will be live Tuesday at 8pm CST.

Tomorrow also marks one year from when I started launching weekly new arrivals at Dusty Road Boutique. It was honestly a last stitch effort to “save” my business. I was floundering, my confidence was plummeting and I was definitely considering throwing in the towel.

That last stitch effort combined with a lot of stubbornness, hard work and consistency led to a huge year of growth and learning!

Consistency is key…..that is not just a saying. Take it seriously if you want to reach your goals!

I’ve got a jam packed week planned including a “pop up” shop in Assiniboia at the Business Expo trade show. It’s exciting and nerve wracking all at the same time.

I hope you enjoyed Day 1 with me and remember…..”you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” ~ A.A Milne
